Raja Ravi Varma & Jewellery

Bejewelled Soiree

gallery g, Lavelle Road, Bangalore

November saw a slew of activity happen at the Foundation premises in Bengaluru. While The Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation proudly announced its association with Google Arts & Culture, showcasing a virtual exhibit of 130 lithographs by Raja Ravi Varma, it also chose to commemorate the occasion by inviting eminent historian and jewellery expert Dr Usha Balakrishnan to deliver a lecture on Raja Ravi Varma and how he influenced jewellery design through his paintings.

Dr. Usha Balakrishnan addressed a packed room of FICCI ladies, each one more spellbound by her talk on the legendary artist’s technique of painting gemstones and jewellery. She described in detail how Ravi Varma travelled across the length and breadth of the sub-continent painting royalty and nobility, thereby many times tracing their mixed cultures and inter-community marriages through the different types of jewellery that the women wore.

Through her talk she detailed different styles of jewellery worn by women during that era, spoke of how those styles and designs have influenced jewellery designs even today and how many ancient styles of jewellery design continue to be used even in present day.

The city’s prominent women gasped with delight as Dr Usha showcased the artist’s brilliant technique in capturing the lustre and gleam of diamonds and pearls. She also mentioned how Ravi Varma’s work has carefully chronicled the evolution of jewellery and design during his life span. Mrs Gitanjali Maini, CEO and Managing Trustee of the Foundation thanked Lakshmi Eshwar, chairperson of FICCI FLO for having curated the audience of more than 90 ladies for the event. The lecture was sponsored by Print Brew.
